L4129 Memorial, Ambarés Cemetery, Bordeaux

49 Sqn Hampden L4129 was shot down by flak over Bordeaux on 16 Oct 1940. The crew is buried together in Ambarés Cemetery and a monument to their sacrifice was erected in Ambarés. An annual ceremony is held to their memory every 8th May.

The Ambares memorial to the crew of 49 Sqn Hampden L4129

The text on the stone reads:

"Les anciens combattants d'Ambares et de la Gironde
Aux aviateurs de la RAF
morts pour la France le 16 octobre 1940

Sgt Corbett op/air 22 ans
Sgt Friend op/air 19 ans
Sgt Amber pilote 21 ans
Sgt Rose pilote 25 ans

Never in the field of human conflict
Was so much owed by so many to so few
W Churchill"

We are grateful to Beryl & Terry Dennett for providing photographs of the local comemmorations.
