Jet Provost T4 at Metheringham Airfield, 2005

In Mar 05 Paul Flynn (tel 07800 945 538) wrote to let us know that he has have worked with the Friends of Metheringham to put an aircraft back into RAF Metheringham. The aircraft is a Jet Provost T4 and will be based at Metheringham long term, being brought back to ground running status over the next 2-3 years.

The JP, serial XS186 is a T4 version, the most powerful version built. It served at only one RAF base , RAF Manby, in a short flying career from 1964 to 1968, before being retired to ground duties, and ultimately storage at several RAF MUs. It arrived at Metheringham in Mar 2004 and has been reassembled and prepared for its respray during its first year. Further work to bring it to ground running status during 2006/07.

Aug 2005 update from the T4 team:

We have made good progress with XS186 this year , and in about 2-3 weeks we will have got the whole aircraft into its primer coating , so it will be looking the best it's been for a long time.

Work is completed with most fittings etc. and items such as ejector seats , instrumement panels etc. are all now ready to be installed.

Plans for next 6 months - Completion of main respray, fitting out of interior , and a start made on getting systems working , such as lights, undercarriage, etc.

Plans for next 12 months - Application of fine detail to respray , i.e. decals , squadron insignia etc. , preperation for engine fitting, and further work on more complex systems i.e. hydraulics , pneumatics.

For further information regarding this interesting development contact the RAF Metheringham Visitor Centre or Paul directly.
