149 Sqn formed as a night bomber squadron on the FE2b and FE2d pusher bomber. On conclusion of the Great War it then became part of the Army of Occupation until March 1919, moving to Tallaght in Ireland before disbanding on 1 August 1919. On 12 Apr 1937 B Flight of 99 Sqn at Mildenhall was expanded to squadron strength and given No 149's number plate, equipped with Handley Page Heyford. It soon re-equipped to Vickers Wellington MkI and was operational on 4 Sep 1939. The sqn was finally employed on so-call Sunray flights to Shallufa in Egypt, for co-operation with the Canal Zone squadrons during exercises, before disbandment on 1 Mar 1950. It stood up again on 14 Aug the same year, the first Coningsby sqn to be equipped with the Wellington B1. It stayed on this type until re-equipping to the Canberra in 1953, flying until disbandment in 1956 at RAF Gutersloh. |
