The RAF Ingham Heritage Group (RIHG) are developing a Heritage Centre on the old RAF Ingham site which will add to the long-term preservation and commemoration of another airfield in Lincolnshire. Their aim is to preserve the memories and deeds of those who served and flew from the airfield during the war years. Interest from local community was clear when an exhibition in May 2010 attracted over 200 visitors in one day and resulted in a group of local volunteers forming the RAF Ingham Heritage Group in November the same year. RIHG have obtained a 25yr lease on an old airmen's mess building (building No 5) at the Ingham site. This is being partially rebuilt and completely refurbished to be opened as a museum focussing on the Polish Sqns that flew from RAF Ingham (300 Sqn, 305 Sqn), but also dedicated to all Polish Sqns. The group has gained planning permission for the building and have secured some funding. It is planned that the Heritage Centre will tell of the deeds and sacrifices made by the Polish, Canadian, Australian and British Air & Ground crews who served at RAF Ingham and of the local community who supported them. It is intended that the Heritage Centre will contain an Educational Wing, where schools and local groups can visit, to learn about their local history. The plan also includes memorials to all that flew from RAF Ingham. The Royal Engineers have also been helping to prepare the site by building a new access road to the museum and other enabling works in April 2012. Most recently the airfield's 70th anniversary was commemorated in Ingham Village Hall in May 2012. The annual membership fee for the Heritage Group is only £5 - further details are on the Ingham website. It is hoped to have the Heritage Centre at Ingham should open by the summer of 2014. |
