Opened as Swinderby in Aug 1939 due to its proximity to Swinderby rail
station, Norton Disney was renamed in 1940 once the airfield was established.
Together with 100 MU at RAF
South Witham and 233 MU at RAF
Market Stainton, RAF Norton Disney's heavily camouflaged 93
MU was responsible for supplying bombs, ammunition and oxygen to the
flying stations, in this case primarily RAF Hemswell,
RAF Waddington and RAF Scampton. Norton Disney also had a small satellite
site nearby.
The satellite at Market Stainton was parented by RAF Wickenby from its
opening in Jan 1943, then Ludford Magna from Jun 1943.
Norton Disney's village church of St Peter includes a memorial plaque
on the south aisle, commemorating 300 Sqn and 301 Sqn's operations from
RAF Swinderby. |
